Mexico Temporary Residence

Mexico's temporary residence visa recognises economic solvency, property ownership and investment in a Mexican company as official grounds

Mexico Has No Single-Figure Golden Visa

Mexico does not market a single 'golden visa' with one headline investment amount. Instead, the Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores' (SRE) residente temporal visa lists several separate grounds — economic solvency, property ownership in Mexico, investment in a Mexican company, family unity, invitation and mobility agreements — and the solvency, property and investment thresholds are expressed in UMA (Unidad de Medida y Actualización) days under the SRE's visa guidelines, with each consulate publishing its own converted amount, rather than as one nationwide figure.

What Is Mexico's Residente Temporal Visa?

Mexico's Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores (SRE) grants residente temporal status for stays of more than 180 days and up to four years, on several separate grounds: economic solvency, ownership of real property in Mexico ('bienes inmuebles'), investment in a Mexican company ('inversionista'), family unity, invitation, or a mobility agreement. Residente permanente is available separately to retirees or pensioners with sufficient pension income and to close relatives of Mexican nationals or permanent residents, or — through the INM in Mexico — after four years as a temporary resident.

Economic solvency is shown through a 12-month average bank balance or six months of income, measured in UMA (Unidad de Medida y Actualización) days under the SRE's visa guidelines; each consulate publishes its own converted amount, and these differ. Once granted the visa and admitted to Mexico, a holder must register with the Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM) within 30 days to receive the residence card.

Grounds for Mexico's Residente Temporal Visa

Economic Solvency

A 12-month average bank balance or six months of income, measured in UMA days under the SRE's visa guidelines; each consulate publishes its own converted amount, and these differ.

Property Ownership

Ownership of real property ('bienes inmuebles') in Mexican territory worth more than a minimum value set in UMA days, recognised as a standalone ground alongside solvency and investment.

Investment in a Mexican Company

Capital invested in a Mexican company above a minimum set in UMA days, or business activity in Mexico that employs a minimum number of workers ('inversionista').

What the Residente Temporal Visa Requires

To obtain residente temporal status on the solvency, property or investment grounds, applicants generally need to:

  • Show economic solvency through a 12-month average bank balance or six months of income, measured in UMA days as set by the relevant consulate — or
  • Show ownership of real property in Mexican territory worth more than the minimum set in UMA days — or
  • Show capital invested in a Mexican company above the minimum set in UMA days, or business activity in Mexico employing a minimum number of workers.
  • Register with the Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM) within 30 days of entering Mexico to receive the residence card.

How to Apply

  1. Apply for the residente temporal visa at a Mexican consulate abroad, choosing the ground that fits your situation (solvency, property, investment, family unity, invitation or a mobility agreement).
  2. Provide the supporting evidence the consulate requires for that ground, such as bank statements, a property title or proof of the investment.
  3. Receive the visa in your passport and enter Mexico within the period the consulate sets.
  4. Register with the Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM) within 30 days of entry to receive your residence card.
  5. Apply for residente permanente status separately as a retiree or pensioner with sufficient pension income, as a close relative of a Mexican national or permanent resident, or — through the INM in Mexico — after four years as a temporary resident.

Solvency, property and investment thresholds are expressed in UMA days under the SRE's visa guidelines; each consulate publishes its own converted amount and its fees in Mexican pesos, and these change — Trem Global does not print a converted amount here; contact us for the current figures.
