Bahrain Golden Residency

Permanent residency in the Kingdom of Bahrain through property ownership, a qualifying salary or pension, or government-nominated talent

What Is Bahrain's Golden Residency?

Golden Residency is Bahrain's permanent residency status for non-Bahrainis, administered by the Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs (NPRA) at the Ministry of Interior.

NPRA lists five ways to qualify: owning property in Bahrain worth at least BD 130,000, a qualifying salary as a retired non-resident or as a long-term employee in Bahrain, a qualifying pension as a long-term resident retiree, or a government nomination for talented individuals.

The Five Ways to Qualify

Property owner — BD 130,000

Own property in Bahrain with a total value of not less than BD 130,000 at the time of purchase.

Retired, not living in Bahrain — BD 4,000

Be retired, not residing in Bahrain — from Bahrain or from any other country in the world — with a basic salary of not less than BD 4,000.

Employee in Bahrain — BD 2,000

Have worked in Bahrain for not less than 5 years, with an average salary of not less than BD 2,000 over the past 5 years.

Resident retiree — BD 2,000

Have worked in the government or private sector in Bahrain for 15 years or more, with an average pension of more than BD 2,000 during your last 5 years of residence.

Talented individuals

Be nominated by a government agency in a specified field. NPRA's published pages do not state a minimum amount for this route.

NPRA's Golden Residency pages list these as separate "Or" conditions — you only need to meet one of the five (checked on 24 September 2026).

Who Can Apply?

Alongside your chosen route's own requirement, applicants generally need to:

  • Hold a passport valid for more than 6 months.
  • Hold a valid health insurance certificate issued in the Kingdom of Bahrain — a general condition for issuing the permanent residency.
  • Provide your bank statement covering the last 6 months.
  • Provide a clear copy of any previous Bahrain residence permit, where you have one.

Who Can Be Included?

The Golden Residency service can enrol these family members onto your record, with a marriage certificate for a spouse, birth certificates for children, and your own birth certificate to verify the relationship for parents. NPRA's published pages do not state an age limit for children or an income test for family members.

  • Spouse.
  • Children.
  • Parents.

Confirmed Fees

NPRA's published fees are:

  • An application fee of BD 5 (non-refundable) per person, for the main applicant and for each family member enrolled.
  • The Golden Residency itself is a permanent residency, subject to a standard administrative fee of BD 300 per person every 10 years.
  • Payment must be made within 30 days of application approval, or the application is automatically cancelled.

Application Process

  1. Apply online through Bahrain's eGovernment portal and choose your qualifying route — property, salary, pension or talent.
  2. Attach the required documents: your passport, valid health insurance in Bahrain, proof of your route's requirement (title deed, salary or pension proof, or a government nomination), and your six-month bank statement.
  3. Pay the application fee and receive your receipt.
  4. NPRA (Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs) reviews your application.
  5. Receive your Golden Residency, and enrol your spouse, children and parents as family members if you wish.

Trem Global has not yet confirmed an overall processing time for the Golden Residency application as a whole against an official source — contact us for a current estimate. NPRA's individual e-service pages (for example, the property-owner and family-enrolment services) separately list a standalone "Processing Time: 5 working days" service-level figure — see the FAQ.

Frequently Asked Questions

The lowest confirmed route is property ownership: own property in Bahrain worth at least BD 130,000 at the time of purchase. Bahrain's Golden Residency also has three non-property routes with their own published minimums: a retired non-resident with a basic salary of at least BD 4,000; someone who has worked in Bahrain for 5 years or more with an average salary of at least BD 2,000 over the past 5 years; and someone who worked in the government or private sector in Bahrain for 15 years or more with an average pension of more than BD 2,000 over their last 5 years of residence. A fifth route, for talented individuals nominated by a government agency, has no published minimum amount.

Yes. Bahrain's Golden Residency service can enrol your spouse, children and parents onto your record; NPRA's published pages do not state an age limit for children or an income test for family members.

Trem Global has not yet confirmed an overall processing time for the main Golden Residency application against an official source. NPRA's own service pages (including the property-owner and family-enrolment services) separately state "Processing Time: 5 working days" as their published service-level figure — contact us for a current estimate for your specific case.

Trem Global has not yet confirmed a minimum stay requirement for Golden Residency holders against an official source — contact us.

NPRA's published pages set the BD 130,000 purchase-value threshold but do not state a minimum holding period after purchase. Trem Global has not otherwise confirmed additional property rules, such as eligible property types, against an official source — contact us for current details.

Golden Residency is a residence status, not citizenship. Trem Global has not found, and has not otherwise confirmed, a published path from Golden Residency to Bahraini nationality — contact us for the latest guidance.

It depends on the route. The retired non-resident route is explicitly for retirees who are not living in Bahrain. The employee and resident-retiree routes require you to have already worked in Bahrain for 5 or 15 years respectively. The property route requires you to own qualifying property in Bahrain; NPRA's pages do not state a residence requirement for the property or talent routes themselves.
