Dominican Republic Residence

Dominican Republic residence for direct foreign investors from USD 200,000, plus a route for rentiers, pensioners and retirees

What Is Dominican Republic Residence by Investment?

The Dominican Republic grants residence to foreign nationals under Ley de Migración No. 285-04, while foreign investment is governed by Ley No. 16-95 sobre Inversión Extranjera (Foreign Investment Law). A direct investor who contributes at least US$200,000 from abroad and registers the investment with ProDominicana may apply for residence; rentiers, pensioners and retirees may apply under a separate route. Residence applications are filed with the Dirección General de Migración (DGM).

This page covers two routes: Direct Foreign Investment and the Rentista, Pensioner or Retiree route. ProDominicana, the country's investment and export promotion agency, publishes the investment figure used on this page; the DGM's own service page for this route could not be read directly today (it returned an access error), so process, fee and timing details beyond ProDominicana's FAQ are marked as not confirmed below.

Two Ways to Qualify

Direct Foreign Investment — USD 200,000

A residence permit for a direct investor who establishes in the Dominican Republic, contributing a minimum of US$200,000 from abroad (or its equivalent in Dominican pesos), and registers the investment with ProDominicana. The residence application is then filed with the Dirección General de Migración (DGM).

Rentista, Pensioner or Retiree

A separate residence route for rentiers, and for pensioners and retirees who receive a pension from a government, official body or company in their home country and wish to reside in and invest in the Dominican Republic. Trem Global has not found a published minimum income amount for this route on an official source — contact us for a current assessment.

Direct Foreign Investment is the only route on this page with a published investment amount. Source: transparencia.prodominicana.gob.do FAQ (checked on 24 September 2026).

Who Can Apply?

To apply for Dominican Republic residence, you must:

  • Contribute a minimum of US$200,000 from abroad (or its equivalent in Dominican pesos) and register the investment with ProDominicana for the Direct Foreign Investment route, or show a qualifying rentista, pension or retirement income for the other route.
  • File your application with the Dirección General de Migración (DGM), including the documentation the DGM requires.
  • Establish yourself in the Dominican Republic as part of the Direct Foreign Investment route.
  • Trem Global has not found published nationality, age or other eligibility conditions for these routes on an official source beyond the above — contact us for guidance specific to your situation.

Who Can Be Included?

On family inclusion:

  • Trem Global has not found a published family-inclusion rule for these residence routes on an official DGM or ProDominicana source — contact us for guidance specific to your situation.
  • Applications, including for any dependants, are filed with the Dirección General de Migración (DGM).

Fees

Costs on top of your chosen route's investment or income requirement:

  • Trem Global has not found published application fees for these residence routes on an official DGM or ProDominicana source — contact us for a current cost estimate.
  • A registered investment may carry its own transfer, registration or professional costs, which are not listed on the ProDominicana or DGM portals.

Application Process

  1. Choose your route: Direct Foreign Investment (contribute and register at least US$200,000 from abroad) or the Rentista, Pensioner or Retiree route.
  2. For the Direct Foreign Investment route, register your investment with ProDominicana and obtain its foreign investment registration certificate (Certificado de Registro de Inversión Extranjera).
  3. File your residence application with the Dirección General de Migración (DGM), including proof of your registered investment and the other documents the DGM requires.

ProDominicana states that foreign residents first receive a provisional residence card and then a definitive residence card from the DGM. Trem Global has not found a published processing time, fee or card validity period for these routes on an official source; the DGM's own service page for this route could not be read directly today. Why the Dominican Republic?

A Clear Investment Threshold

ProDominicana confirms a minimum direct foreign investment of US$200,000 for residence, a single published figure to plan around.

A Route for Retirees

Rentiers, pensioners and retirees with a qualifying income from their home country may apply for residence under a separate route.

A Long-Established Legal Framework

Residence is granted under Ley de Migración No. 285-04, and foreign investment is governed by Ley No. 16-95 sobre Inversión Extranjera (Foreign Investment Law).

Two Clear Steps

The investment is registered with ProDominicana, and residence applications for both routes are filed with the Dirección General de Migración (DGM), the country's immigration authority.
